Priya Mathiy

Hi! I am a senior Health Humanities and Biology major at Penn State Abington with research experience in humanities, engineering, and biomedical topics. Before finishing a research internship at Vanderbilt Medical Center, I was awarded first place in my division two years in a row at the PSU Abington Research Fair (Humanities 2022-23, Science and Engineering 2023-24). I've also presented my research nationally and on the graduate level at Weill Cornell, UPenn, and Vanderbilt School of Engineering. After graduating, I'll be pursuing an MD/MPH with a research focus in women's health.

Current Research Project:
The efficacy of 4-thiazolidinone against gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) cancer cells.
Project Description:
I am currently serving a project investigating the efficacy of 4-thiazolidinone, an organic compound recognized for its anti-carcinomic properties in medicinal chemistry, specifically against gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) cancer cells. The objective of this research is to evaluate the therapeutic impact of 4-thiazolidinones with varying dosages, substituents, and steric strain on GIST cells. Additionally, we aim to minimize the precipitation produced by this compound to safeguard healthy, non-cancerous, cells. We investigate 4-thiazolidinones with the goal of establishing a viable therapeutic alternative to more aggressive cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and surgery for patients across the world.
